Do I pay VAT and VRT together?
No, VAT and VRT are not paid together. VRT is calculated on the OMSP excluding VAT, while VAT (23%) is charged separately on the purchase price when applicable.
When do I need to pay VRT, and what if I’m late?
VRT must be paid within 30 days of your vehicle entering Ireland. If you miss this deadline, an Additional VRT charge applies. This late fee starts at 0.1% of the total VRT and increases by another 0.1% for each day after the 30-day window.
How is VRT calculated for hybrid cars?
VRT for hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars is calculated the same way as it is for petrol and diesel vehicles. While hybrids previously qualified for tax relief, that scheme ended in 2020. Today, hybrids are subject to the standard VRT rates based on their CO₂ emissions.
Does VRT apply to electric vehicles?
Yes, VRT does apply to electric vehicles, but there is relief available. Electric cars and motorcycles registered before 31 December 2025 can get up to €5,000 off their VRT. Full relief applies to vehicles valued up to €40,000, with reduced relief between €40,000–€50,000, and none above €50,000.
How long does the VRT registration process take?
The VRT registration process typically takes 1–2 weeks. It takes 3–5 business days at Dublin Port and 5–7 days at Rosslare Port. Once all documents are submitted, your certificate is posted within another 3–5 days.
Can I appeal my VRT assessment?
Yes, you can appeal your VRT assessment. If you believe Revenue’s OMSP is too high, you must request a review within 30 days of the assessment.
